Tom Flint’s 80 x 60 cm oil on canvas, "View of The City Of London from The Shard," is a profound and dark meditation captured from the lofty heights of The Shard on a stormy, awesome day as night closes in. The piece conveys the powerful drift of clouds, with an ominous, shadowy mark cutting through the composition, evoking the sheer force of the wind at such an altitude. Glimpses of a "twilight Tower" emerge in the distance, beyond the recognisable forms of the Gherkin and the Walkie-Talkie building. One can almost feel the wisps of dark, brooding cloud, pregnant with rain or perhaps signifying a storm just passed, allowing moments of light to pierce through. This painting grew from a single drawing and photographs, yet it’s the essence of that initial sketch – the strong wind movement and the unique perspective where fog and mist streak past the window – that truly defines it. Inspired by the wonderful, enigmatic, and sublime qualities of Turner’s later works, where figuration almost evaporates into atmosphere, this piece seeks a similar dialogue, capturing a sublime, misty layering of dust, smoke, and atmosphere, punctuated by glimpses of colour, while remaining true to the observed London scene.
