This painting, 'The Shard, London, With Golden Moon,' came together over time as I layered the colour. I was aiming for subtle variations in the blue tonal values, similar to Whistler’s Thames paintings – which were a big inspiration. I was looking at his work a lot then, wanting to capture that beautiful essence Whistler does with the Thames in moonlight or at night: those subtle blues moving into intense darks, maybe with little pinches of bright colour. For me, those bright colours became the lights dotted across the London skyline. I wanted them whispering gently, fading off and slowly disappearing into the background horizon. It was also intriguing trying to capture the subtle layering of the buildings as they recede.
