This piece, 'Stormy Big Ben and Parliament, London,' is another work presented in a circular format. I frequently employ the circle as a motif for viewing; I find it captures a viewpoint with a unique intensity, offering a greater sense of completeness and focus than a traditional rectangular landscape format.
This particular painting originates from a small sketch I made whilst inside the London Eye. My intention was to capture the distinctively beautiful quality of a foggy, rainy day in London, as observed over the often 'brown, dirty' (as I perceive them) stone edifices of the Houses of Parliament.
Against this backdrop, the illuminated clock face of Big Ben emerges as a focal point, casting its light into the scene. From there, the viewer’s eye might be drawn further into the composition, towards the background where glimpses of Westminster Abbey and other architectural details can be discerned through the atmospheric conditions.
