Harrogate, Trinity Methodist Church, Trinity Road

Although this is a relatively small painting, executed fairly quickly, my core intention was to distill the specific atmosphere I associate with Harrogate. I aimed to capture the essence of its often dark, shadowy, grey and damp colour palette, particularly how the skyline conveys those moody tones. The composition centres on the solid, slab-stone construction of the Methodist church in the mid-ground. This structure is set against the subtle complexities of the surrounding road surfaces, where muted greys are infused with underlying pinks and purples. The church’s resulting silhouette is placed against a 'beautifully dull' sky – a quality that, paradoxically, seems to gain vitality through the act of painting. The work seeks to be a true depiction of this specific Harrogate view in midwinter, evoking a tangible sense of the cold, damp streets, while hints of silvery light in the sky accentuate the wet rooftops of the dark stone buildings. This interplay between architecture and atmosphere in this part of England is something I find deeply compelling.
